Food

With the reduced food prices compared to the west of Europe, I indulged and took the opportunity to eat out more often, without necessarily going over budget.

Although the average price of food per day may seem low, this includes the included breakfast of hostels (at no extra cost), one meal out per day, and snacks I purchased as part of my groceries (i.e. I only ate out once per day).

Total Cost of Food: €399.84 / $447.41 USD / $591.90 CAD

  • Total cost of eating out: €352.49 / $325.71 USD / $431.00 CAD
  • Total cost of groceries (about 12 days worth of food): €47.35 / $52.98 USD / $70.10 CAD

  • St-Michael’s Bridge tower (Prague): €3.82 / $4.27 USD / $5.65 CAD
  • Wieliczka Salt Mines (Krakow): €22.32 / $24.97 USD / $33.03 CAD
  • Japanese Gardens (Wroclaw): €0.95 / $1.06 USD / $1.41 CAD
  • Morskie Oko Lake (Zakopane): €1.19 / $1.76 USD / $1.33 CAD
  • City Walking Tour (Bratislava): €7.00 / $7.83 USD / $10.36 CAD
  • City Walking Tour (Budapest): €5.00 / $5.59 USD / $7.40 CAD

  • Bran Castle (Brasov): €7.63 / $8.54 USD / $11.30 CAD

Miscellaneous

Most of these can be scratched off the total cost of the trip, as many of these may not apply to you. However, in the spirit of full disclosure, here they are:

  • Postcards & mail: €7.52 / $8.41 USD / $11.12 CAD
  • Washroom supplies (toothbrush, shampoo, etc): €7.27 / $8.13 USD / $10.74 CAD
  • Laundry (X2): €7.60 / $8.50 USD / $11.24 CAD

One of the positive surprises in eastern Europe is that many hostels offer laundry services for free, which reduced the potential overall cost significantly.

In Summary

Eastern Europe is indeed one of the cheapest destinations to travel, however this does not necessarily apply to every country on the map. Indeed, countries like Slovakia (which uses the Euro as their currency) and Romania are a bit more expensive than their counterparts, however still remain an affordable option to travel.
